Brian Hart’s work owes equally to the tenets of traditional painting and to Pop Art. Rather than taking a straightforward approach to his subject matter, he reinterprets stories and myths he enjoyed as a child. Using pictures appropriated from a wide range of sources, including advertising, cartoons, and pornography, he gives equal weight to images drawn from the works of the masters. This is not meant to disrespect famous artists; instead it is meant to show how these images can have the same power and importance. The dense layering purposefully obscures the meaning and invites the viewer to tease out what is happening by discovering and deciphering all of the individual elements.
Brian received his B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005
